Invisalign has transformed orthodontic care by providing a subtle and comfortable alternative to traditional braces for teeth straightening. If you're new to Invisalign, you may be curious about wearing your aligners at night. The answer is yes! Itโs essential to wear your aligners during sleep to maximize their effectiveness and ensure you achieve the best possible results. By doing so, you help your teeth shift into the desired positions more efficiently, making the entire treatment process quicker and more effective. Remember, consistency is key in getting the most out of your Invisalign journey!
This article covers everything you need to know about wearing Invisalign at night, including benefits, potential risks, best practices, and answers to common questions.
Can You Sleep With Invisalign?
Yes! Invisalign is designed to be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours per day, which includes sleeping. Nighttime wear is essential to ensure consistent pressure on your teeth, gradually shifting them into the desired position. Skipping nighttime wear can delay progress and extend your treatment time.
Benefits of Sleeping With Invisalign
Continuous Teeth Movement: Your teeth need constant, gentle pressure to move effectively. Wearing Invisalign while you sleep ensures that your aligners are working around the clock, leading to a smoother, more predictable treatment timeline.
Faster and More Efficient Results: Skipping nighttime wear can slow down your treatment. By keeping your aligners in place for the recommended hours, you stay on track with your treatment plan and avoid unnecessary delays.
Less Discomfort in the Morning: Some patients experience mild discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners. Wearing them overnight allows your teeth to adjust while you sleep, so you wake up with less sensitivity.
Helps Prevent Teeth from Shifting Back: Your teeth are constantly moving. If you donโt wear your Invisalign overnight, they may start shifting back to their previous positions, undoing your progress.
Risks & Challenges of Sleeping With Invisalign
While sleeping with Invisalign is essential, there are a few potential downsides to consider:
Dry Mouth & Bad Breath: Wearing aligners overnight can reduce saliva flow, leading to dry mouth and potential bad breath. Proper oral hygiene and drinking enough water can help prevent this.
Discomfort with New Aligners: New trays can feel tight and uncomfortable initially. However, this discomfort usually subsides within a few days.
Grinding & Clenching (Bruxism): Some people grind their teeth at night (bruxism), which may cause additional wear on the aligners. If you grind your teeth excessively, speak with your dentist about potential solutions.
Bacteria Buildup: If aligners are not cleaned properly, bacteria and plaque can accumulate, leading to dental issues such as cavities and gum irritation.
Best Practices for Sleeping With Invisalign
To ensure a comfortable and effective experience, follow these best practices:
Wear Your Aligners for the Full 20-22 Hours: Only remove them when eating, drinking anything other than water, or brushing your teeth.
Clean Your Aligners Before Bedtime: Bacteria can build up on aligners throughout the day. Before sleeping, clean them with a gentle, clear antibacterial soap or Invisalign cleaning crystals. Avoid toothpaste, as it can be abrasive.
Brush & Floss Before Bed: Always brush and floss before putting your aligners in at night to prevent trapped food particles and plaque buildup.
Use a Soft Case When Not in Use: If you take out your aligners for any reason, store them in a protective case to keep them clean and safe.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dry mouth and bad breath while wearing Invisalign overnight.
Avoid Eating or Drinking (Except Water) While Wearing Invisalign: Foods and beverages can stain or damage your aligners. Always remove them before eating and drinking anything other than water.
FAQsย
Do You Sleep With Invisalign Every Night?
Yes! Invisalign must be worn every night to keep your treatment on track. Skipping nights can slow progress and cause teeth to shift back.
Can I Sleep Without My Invisalign for One Night?
While one night without aligners wonโt completely ruin your treatment, it can cause minor delays. Consistency is key to achieving the best results.
What Happens If I Forget to Wear Invisalign Overnight?
If you forget to wear your aligners for one night, put them back in as soon as possible. If they feel tight, wear them longer before switching to your next set.
Can I Sleep on My Side While Wearing Invisalign?
Yes! Sleeping position doesnโt affect Invisalign. However, if you grind your teeth, you may experience added pressure on your aligners.
Should I Use a Nightguard Instead of Invisalign?
No, your Invisalign trays act as a barrier to protect your teeth. If you experience excessive grinding, consult your dentist for additional protection.
How Do I Prevent Bad Breath While Sleeping With Invisalign?
Brush and floss thoroughly before bed, clean your aligners daily, and drink plenty of water to reduce bacteria buildup.
Conclusion: Keep Your Invisalign In for the Best Results
So, do you sleep with Invisalign? Absolutely! Wearing your aligners overnight is critical for successful treatment. By following proper hygiene, cleaning, and wearing your aligners for the full 20-22 hours per day, youโll stay on track toward a straighter, healthier smile.

I have to start off by saying that Dr. Hayslipโs assistants are the most comical and friendly people I have ever met. I donโt think a second went by that I wasnโt laughing at something one of them said. Dr. Hayslip was just as funny and I could thank him a million for the great job he did on my teeth but that would still not be enough. I could say that I never in my life looked forward to going to the dentist until now, Iโve come to know every single person in the office and Iโll probably drop by just to hang out. For the first time ever I actually smiled in my school picture.
Thank you.. thank you.. thank you..

Dr. Hayslip and Staff,
Happier more confident and younger looking are just a few of the feeling I am experiencing since Dr. Hayslip gave me my new gorgeous smile. He and his staff are not only professional and caring but they are compassionate as well. The whole experience was so pleasant and Dr. Hayslip takes great pride in his work and it shows. I couldnโt believe how beautiful the temporaries looked and the permanent are unbelievable.
There is so much truth in the phrase โWhen you smile, the whole world smiles with youโ!
Thank you for changing my life.

Due to my โbiteโ being off, my bottom front teeth were worn down and were very jiggered. I talked with my regular dentist, whom I had been seeing for many years, about what could be done to fix my bottom teeth. He didnโt seem to be too concerned. I assumed that his only solution was at some point in time he would fit me with a partial plate, or even worse- dentures. I was very disappointed.
Then, someone told me about the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in Augusta, Georgia. I made an appointment to get an evaluation as to what could be done to save my bottom teeth. The representative told me that my bite was way off and in order to fix my bottom teeth, it would require extensive work throughout my whole mouth.
After I returned home, I noticed a sign in front of a dental office on Russell Parkway, MIDDLE GEORGIA CENTER FOR COSMETIC DENTISTRY. I made an appointment and visited this dentist to get his opinion on what could be done to save my bottom teeth. When Dr. Curtis
Hayslip looked at my teeth and my mouth, he gave me his recommendation, it was the same as the evaluation that I had received at the Dental School in Augusta.
I agreed for Dr. Hayslip to do whatever he deemed necessary to save my teeth. The total process involved grinding down all of my teeth and replacing them with crowns-28 crowns in all. Fitting the new crowns not only corrected my bite, it also enhanced my looks. The results were greater than my expectations. My new teeth looked perfect.
It has been over five years since I had all my teeth crowned and I have never regretted having it done. My new teeth not only helped my looks, but it also helped my self-esteem - I'm not embarrassed to smile now.
Thank you Dr. Hayslip for saving my teeth and improving my life.

Dear Dr. Hayslip,
I never realized how drastic the changes would be when I made the decision to have my Dura-thins applied to my teeth. Dr. Hayslip and I discussed the procedure and the outcome. However, I was so pleasantly surprised at how they looked. I used to dread smiling and hated seeing pictures of my teeth. Now, I receive so many compliments; I love to show my new smile! My only regret is that I did not do it sooner. I highly recommend Dr. Hayslip and his staff. They are a great team of professionals who get the job done and done well.
