Not all dentists offer emergency dental care, but most people will need that kind of care at some point in their lives. Emergency dental care is necessary whenever you feel that you're confronted by a life-threatening situation, or by one which involves extreme pain or bleeding. At times like these, it is essential to seek out treatment at the very earliest opportunity, so as to prevent the situation from worsening.

It's important to know what constitutes a dental emergency, so that you don't leave a dangerous situation untreated, and have it develop into a truly dangerous event. Whenever you're in doubt, it is safest to call your dentist and describe the situation, and let him/her make the call. Generally speaking, a dental emergency exists whenever you're suffering extreme pain or loss of blood, or when you've sustained some kind of breakage in your jawbone or other facial bones. Loose teeth require immediate attention, because they might be saved by prompt action. Teeth which are fractured or broken also call for prompt attention by a dental professional. A lost filling or an abscessed tooth is also considered a dental emergency, and should be addressed at the earliest opportunity.

Contact your dentist immediately if you think you may have a dental emergency. Your dentist may refer you to an urgent care clinic or to your local hospital, depending on the kind of treatment which is necessary. But you can count on your dental professional to know what course of action is best after you accurately describe the situation.

Can tooth pain go away on its own?

Some types of tooth pain will fade away after a day or two on their own. This is true of gum irritation and some kinds of tooth pain which are sourced from outside the tooth. Any kind of pain that comes from within the tooth will not subside on its own, and you will need to make a trip to your dentist's office to have it resolved.

Immediate dental care may not always be available, but you should always contact your dentist when you have a legitimate dental emergency. When your dentist has evaluated the situation, he/she may recommend immediate dental care, and if the situation does not involve a crisis, you may be able to wait until your next regularly scheduled appointment.

Many dental clinics offer same-day service when dental emergencies are occurring. This kind of service is just a cut below immediate dental care, and it is recommended for situations which require prompt attention, but are not necessarily emergencies. Same-day service is generally easier to accommodate than emergency service, just because professional help is more likely to be available.
