The most important things to know about dental veneers are: you can expect your dentist to remove a thin layer of enamel prior to the procedure, the entire process may take as many as three visits, all visits are quick and painless, and your veneers may last as long as 15 or 20 years.

Veneers are often used to hide stained or discolored teeth, to cover up cracked or chipped teeth, or to cover teeth which are abnormally small for an adult. They are also often used to remove the gap which may develop between front teeth, and which impart a negative look to your appearance.

1

Before starting veneers, you and your dentist will discuss what you're trying to achieve with veneers and if this is the best option.

2

The first appointment may begin with grinding down a thin layer of enamel so the veneer can be installed and making an impression. Sometimes, it may not be necessary to grind down the enamel. This would be decided by your dentist for each individual case.

3

After that, another visit will be necessary so the laboratory-made veneers can be fitted to your teeth snugly, and in an appealing manner. In all, two visits will probably be necessary before your veneers are in place.

Dental Veneer Benefits

The biggest benefit of having dental veneers installed is that your smile will be dramatically improved. Any imperfections in your teeth will be hidden, and your smile will be much brighter than before. You'll also gain a wealth of self-confidence from knowing that your smile is the best it can be, and that you're making a good impression on everyone you meet.

In addition, veneers can usually be completed in two appointments. It is a conservative treatment where often little or no tooth reduction is required for perfect results. Veneers are durable, resistant to staining and chipping, and very esthetically pleasing.

If you opt for composite veneers or tooth bonding, these will be the less expensive of the two types, and will range anywhere from $400 to $1,500 per tooth. Porcelain veneers on the other hand, will probably cost between $900 and $2,500 for each veneer which gets installed.

Dental Veneer Lifespan

We all want our dental restorations to last a lifetime. It's entirely possible that your porcelain veneers may last 20 years or even longer, provided that you take care of them conscientiously. Maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, avoiding bad habits like nail biting, pen/pencil chewing, or chewing on ice, and wearing a night guard will increase the longevity of a porcelain veneer. Composite veneers will have a somewhat shorter lifespan, but can be replaced more often because they're relatively less expensive.

Care for your dental veneers should not be any different from your normal dental hygiene approach - you need to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash occasionally. The only difference is that you should probably use the softest toothbrush you can find, so as to protect the surface of the veneers against any kind of scratching or other damage.
