There are times when a crack, chip, break, and/or cavity in the tooth becomes significant enough that the nerve of the tooth becomes infected. In order to remove this infection and save the tooth, a root canal therapy may be recommended.   A root canal involves removing the infected pulp/nerve of the tooth and disinfecting the root canal

The advantages of saving the natural tooth are maintenance of efficient chewing, normal bite force and sensation remains, natural appearance, and it protects your other teeth from excessive wear or strain. Most times, extracting a tooth may end up being more expensive and take more appointments to replace the missing tooth with a denture, bridge, or implant.

A modern root canal treatment is very similar to a routine dental filling and can usually be completed in one or two appointments. It is relatively painless and extremely effective.

1

Your dentist will review all x-rays and other images available of your mouth, and will take new images if necessary.

2

A local anesthetic will be administered to numb the affected area.

3

A small rubber sheet will be placed over the affected area to protect and isolate the tooth in question.

4

Your dentist will drill down into the tooth, exposing the pulp.

5

The pulp will be removed.

6

The space formerly occupied by the pulp will be enlarged and cleaned.

7

An anti-microbial medication will be administered to remove any remaining bacteria.

8

The canal will be filled and sealed to prevent further infection.

9

A final restoration such as a crown will be needed.

No, it does not, and the whole procedure is no more uncomfortable or difficult than filling a deep cavity would be. Since the affected area is numbed, all you would feel is some pressure at various times during the procedure.

How much does a root canal cost?

The typical cost of a root canal procedure is somewhere between $700 and $1,100, although this will depend on what part of the country you live in, as well as the fee charged by your dentist. The cost will also be impacted by which tooth it is in your mouth that requires the root canal, because some teeth are more difficult to operate on than others. You should check with your dental insurance carrier before having the procedure done, so you'll know how much of the cost will be reimbursed by your carrier. In some cases, you may have to pay the entire cost out-of-pocket.
